The Adventure...
Myself and two of my close friends decided to take
a day an go to Six Flags: Great Adventure. We hadn't been there
for a number of years and I knew that they had put in quite a
number of new rides. We picked a Saturday in August because it
was the only time all three of us could possibly go.
We started out at roughly 7:30am in hopes of getting
to the park by 1:00pm. On the way, we made a stop for breakfast
and a quick stop at a rest area. The traffic wasn't too bad (surprise)
and we were able to get to the entrance by 12:30pm. The first
thing that hit me was the $16 parking price. Ouch.
After purchasing our $45+ tickets, we waited in
line to go through the metal detectors. I don't mind having to
wait to be "safe". However, a lot of the guards were
just letting people go who set the device off. Oh well, it didn't
take too long, about 10 minutes, to get through the metal detectors.
Medusa was the main reason we came to this park;
none of us had ever been on a floorless rollercoaster. We start
at a fast walk back to the ride. When we finally got there line
was OUT PAST THE QUEUE!! Ouch. I sort of expected a long line,
it was 1:45pm. After we had been in line for about 15 minutes,
the ride operaters put the 3rd train in use. Yay! The line moved
much more quickly...or would have if we had not been cut in front
of multiple times. This was a bit irritating, but we didn't get
too upset.. We actually managed to grab front seat on this puppy.
It is by FAR the best ride in the park. Super-smooth, quite fast,
and great inversions put it in the "top 20" coaster
list. Nice job B&M!
After a great ride on Medusa, we decided to head
over to the "Great American Scream Machine". The line
was incredibly long, but at this point, they all were. We waited
in line for about 1 hour 30 minutes before finally getting to
the station. Despite the "No line jumping!" signs, we
were still cut in front of multiple times. There were what looked
like Lifeguard chairs, I guess for people to monitor the lines,
but nobody was in them.
When we finally got on the ride, it was ok. The
OTSR beat me up quite a bit, but no major injuries. The first
half of the ride is "head bang city", but the second
half is surpisingly smooth. If I rode is again, I would be ready
for the headbanging and I would probably be fine.
We were pretty hungry after the Scream Machine,
so we decided to grab a bite to eat. Food was good, though prices
were steep, even for a theme park. We each got a hamburger and
a large drink. We managed to grab a place in the shade and watch
people play the rigged games =).
After the food, we went back to Medusa again, but
the line was even longer than before. We didn't feel like waiting
again. We decided to take a relaxing ride on the "Sky buckets",
mainly because we didn't want to have to walk to the other end
of the park. It was a 20 minute wait for the Sky Buckets. We had
no idea it was going to be that long...but oh well. The view was
fairly nice.
Both Batman: The Ride and "The Chiller"
both had long lines so we decided to pass. We walked to the other
end of the park and rode Rolling Thunder. It's extremely rough,
even for a woodie. I think they need some serious retracking and
a paint job. Other than that, it's a good coaster. We rode it
twice, because there was no line.
I wanted to ride Medusa, so we made our way back
to that section of the park again. The line was still sooo...
long, so I opted for "Runaway Train" instead. We waited
about 30 minutes for it. I actually enjoyed this coaster. It's
an above-average Arrow-Mine Train coaster. It picks up some speed
in the middle of the ride and has a nice little sharp turn. Much
better than Hershey's "Trailblazer".
It was about 5:00pm after the "Runaway Train"
and we were hungry again. We went back to the same food area as
before and each got a small pizza and a drink. The pizza's were
like $8 bucks a piece, what a rip, but we got it anyway.
We had a bunch of change to spend, so we decided
to waste it trying to win some stuff in the arcade. We saw on
machine where you could win "Zippo" lighters! Coolness!
Unfortunately, they were fake! D'oh! I felt pretty dumb.
Finally, we decide to hit "Batman: The Ride"
as our last rollercoaster of the evening. After waiting in line
for about 20 minutes, a large group of teenage guys decides to
cut in front of us. This was pretty irritating.
When we finally made it to the station, we saw one
of the fatter kids in the group couldn't get the harness down!!
Haha! That will teach you for jumping lines! The ride itself was
good, but it was a bit short for a B&M. The elements were
in rapid succession and that made up for the shortness of the
ride.
We made one last stop into a mock casino where my
friend won about 200 aluminum coins on his first dollar! He still
has those in his room, I think.
Overall
Ok, SIX FLAGS: GREAT ADVENTURE is not a good
park. It's about average. A lot of the rides are run down and
the rollercoasters aren't exactly "top of the line".
The admission is very steep, $46/person. For that price, you'd
think they could keep the park cleaner and put in some "Line
Guards". The getting cut in front of was the most irritating
thing. It's not a bad park, but I don't think I'd pay to get into
it again unless they reformed some of the areas.
