Waay back in 1976, a man with the last name of Schwarzkopf unleashed
on the world the very first steel coaster to feature a vertical
loop. "Revolution", located at Six Flags: Magic Mountain,
was the world's first modern, looping coaster. Its construction
began a new era of coaster design.
Two years later... waaay... over on the other side of the country,
Hersheypark begins to construct Schwarzkopf's second looping creation:
sooperdooperlooper, SDL for short. This coaster has a first drop
of 57ft and then goes right up into the loop.
The
sooperdooperlooper fits very nicely into Hersheypark's main area,
"Comet Hollow". The deep blue color of the track contrasts
very nicely with the white colored-comet and adds a nice flavor
against the black and grey Great Bear.
The queue is extremely long and winds back and forth. This is
a reminder of how popular this ride once was. Today, there's NEVER
more than a 5-10minute wait, most of the time, the SDL is a walk
on. I'm not quite sure why. It's in a busy section of the park
and it's always a nice ride.
The trains are a little less open than some newer coasters, but
the seats are fairly comforatable. A small lap down secures us
into position and away we go! The old chain lift is pretty cool,
but not very tall. If you're lucky, you can catch a glimpse of
the 'Bear as it flies through the corkscrew. Once we get to the
top, there's a little dip and turnaround before the drop.
The
drop itself is ok for an older coaster. We drop down and then
head right up into the loop. This loops feels much different then
the normal eliptical loops of modern coasters. This is actually
one of the most intense loops you'll ever get to ride. It pulls
very nice G's and gives more of a feeling of "being up-side
down".
After the loop, we ascend a nice turn to the left and pass through
the loop. It's a nice little effect that is almost never copied
in modern day coasters. After that "pass through" we
take a small dive into a tunnel. It's customary for you to scream
as loud as you can and try to deafen other passengers. ;)
Out of the tunnel, we go up a little hill and hit the midcourse
trims. These slow us down to a near stop before we dive back down.
We then begin the helix finale. If you reach waayy out when you're
on the helix, you can sometimes catch a nearby tree branch. After
the helix we ram into the final brake run.
Overrall the sooperdooperlooper is a nice little ride.
There's nothing spectacular about it, but the simple fact that
there is literally NO LINE makes this coaster a "must-ride".
There's really no reason not too.
